Over fifty works of art depict how the automobile has been a consistent presence in the work of many artists, including one youth from Los Angeles who placed nationally as a finalist in the U.S. version of the worldwide Toyota Dream Car Art Contest. The bulk of the show features work by pioneer Chicano artists of Los Angeles. Gilbert “Magu” Lujan, Frank Romero, Carlos Almaraz, and other “veteranos” of the Chicano art movement that depict the ubiquitous cars of Los Angeles as nostalgic objects of past decades, colorful customized expressions of East L.A. culture, and as anthropomorphic forms embodying mythic presences in contemporary times. These paintings, sculptures, prints, ceramics, and other artworks chronicle a generation’s fascination with the automobiles of their youth and the transformations of contemporary production cars into vehicles of cultural identity.

A Decade Later: The Chicano Collection Returns to Plaza de la Raza

Ten years ago this month, Cheech Marin released a limited-edition portfolio series created by master printer Richard S. Duardo of Modern Multiples that launched with an exhibition at Plaza de la Raza followed by a national tour produced by Melissa Richardson Banks that continues today.

This exhibition was the culmination of the trio’s two-year project, which included the production and distribution of 115 archival fine art print sets — each containing 26 large-scale pigment prints of artwork in Cheech’s notable Chicano art collection and 26 linocut portraits by Artemio Rodriguez of each featured artist. Fifty of the 115 sets were donated to major museums and universities across the nation, including LACMA, San Francisco’s de Young Museum, and the Smithsonian Institution. One set was given to each participating artist, and the remaining sets are available for sale. More information about the project can be found at www.TheChicanoCollection.net or by emailing Melissa at mrb@downtownmuse.com.

TOY DRIVE: Holiday Gifts Needed for Students

Share the joy of the holiday season by donating a gift to a child! Each year, Plaza de la Raza hosts a community celebration for its students. This year, over 700 youth, ages 4-18 years share their talents by showing what they’ve learned at Plaza with their families, friends and the public. The students also appreciate the gifts that they receive during this event, which are generously donated by individuals and companies who care. For most, these donated gifts are the only presents they receive for Christmas.

Consider giving a cash donation or an unwrapped new toy
