Programs

Plaza de la Raza offers a wide range of programs designed to meet the needs of all students regardless of age, experience, or financial situation.  All students and adults must be vaccinated in order to take any classes on-site. Unvaccinated children and adults must show a recent (less than 48 hours) negative PCR/Antigen test weekly.

Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced Classes

Beginning/Intermediate/Advanced Classes are labeled as such through the program. Some classes may have the additional label "FSC" or "CON" which are explained below:

FSC CLASSES

Classes designated as FSC in the program provide free beginning-level arts recreation activities to students ages 5-18 who meet poverty, very low, and low-income requirements and reside within designated areas set forth by the City of Los Angeles. Weekly classes include group instruction in various forms of dance, music, theatre, and visual arts. This program is sponsored by the FamilySource Center (FSC).

CONSERVATORY CLASSES

Classes designated as CON in the program are designed to provide intermediate through advanced-level arts recreation activities to talented students in all disciplines. These classes are available to students throughout the greater Los Angeles area for a nominal registration fee.

Student Mariachi Program

Students of all ages explore the rich musical tradition of Mexico in group classes led by a team of well-trained and highly qualified mariachi instructors. Bi-weekly classes are offered in guitarrón (bass guitar), vihuela, trumpet, violin, and voice.

Family Program (Discounted Classes for the Entire Family)

In order to provide arts education to all members of the community, Plaza de la Raza offers after-work courses to adults in all disciplines. A special Family Plan is made available at a discounted rate to enable all family members to participate together in Plaza's recreational programs.

Recitals, Exhibitions, and Open Houses

Each year, Plaza hosts several student performances including the Spring Dance Recital, Student Art Exhibition, Music Recital, and Youth Theatre Production. All events are open and free to the public.

Plaza Cultural Ambassador Program

Students in the Plaza Cultural Ambassador Program have the additional opportunity to perform in public as part of their class curriculum. Depending on their skill set, these students (aged 18 and under) are able to join Plaza's Folklorico Dance Troupe, Latin Jazz Ensemble, Mariachi Musician Group, or Salsa Band. These groups will be asked to perform at dozens of community venues and events throughout Los Angeles each year. On Occasion, they are asked to perform across the State or Nation.
